Dog owners have a lot of “must do” to ensure the well being of the pet. All dog owners must know how to give the dog a pill as dogs, like humans, get sick. Administering oral medications to sick dogs would not be too burdensome as the task will be over when the dog gets well. The need to give the dog its daily vitamins and supplements can be a very arduous task for an owner that does not know how to pill the dog the easy way. So how do you give a dog a pill?

A dog that spews the pill or eludes the master makes pilling even more difficult. Dogs are cunning animals so that even if the pill is hidden inside a treat, the treat will be eaten and the pill spewed out. Because dogs would not understand that the pill would make him well, it would be up to the owner to learn how to make pill giving a little easier.

Some dogs would take the pill offered by the master without a fuss. But as soon as the master’s back is turned, out the pill would go from the dog’s mouth. To make sure that the pill was swallowed, an owner has to stay with the dog for a while.

Another pilling technique is to disguise the taste of pill with the taste of food. Mix the crushed pill with a little amount of the dog’s favorite food. This technique though is not applicable for dogs with dietary restrictions. The dog would not know that the pill is hidden in the ham, chicken breast or liverwurst as dogs usually gobble up their food.

Sick dogs are harder to pill as they usually refuse to eat. If this is the case, mixing the pill to the food or hiding the pill in the dog’s favorite treat will be ineffective. The pet must be coached to swallow the pill by placing it directly to the base of the tongue. Placing the pill on the dog’s mouth would be much easier if the dog is used to being touched or the teeth being brushed. Carefully open the mouth and insert the pill deep in the mouth. To prevent the dog from biting your hand, the teeth must be covered by the flews. Gently blow on the nose and rub the throat to encourage the dog to swallow the pill.
