Book Review: The Music is Written

Tatiana Pietrzak’s The Music is Written is a riveting compilation of poetry that strives to journey into the world of music, sounds, and rhythm. Pietrzak’s subject selection for her poetry is fascinating because of the dynamic between poetry and music. Throughout the poems in the book, Pietrzak sends one message, loud and clear: the expression of music is beautiful, soothing, and can be found hiding in the unlikeliest of places.

Book Review: White by Steven Felicelli

White is an imaginative journey through the life of an unnamed, deceased painter and his gallery of art through the narration of said artist’s best friend. Steven Felicelli has arranged the artist’s life by his paintings in passage after passage appearing to be footnotes beneath…nothing. While each passage describes a fascinating piece of art, they superficially reference, blank, white paper. But is something there? Felicelli certainly provides us what we need to conclude so. To SEE what is not there is to use Felicelli’s descriptions of the actual pieces and his wording and sentence structure to visualize SOMETHING.

Book Review: 1923: A Memoir

1923: A Memoir, by Harry Leslie Smith, is a lasting memory of his legacy and imprint on the world. While this is a must-read book because it narrates the intriguing early life of the author, it is also fascinating because of its historical backdrop: the Great Depression and World War II. Ultimately, this is a story of true survival. It is about boy turning into a man, one who must conquered life’s many peaks and valleys en route to becoming the reservoir of knowledge and experience that Smith is today.

Book Review: A South African Story

Chuaro Zuzo’s Different is Not Stupid or Ugly is a culture-oriented book that affirms the idea that girls cannot be expected to be good wives without proper training. Zuzo uses crisp sentence structure and a clear story line to go along with a series of helpful illustrations. These stylistic elements lend readability to the work–without the tension of dense, technical writing. Ultimately, this book exposes the reader to South African culture and to the main premise: being different is not being stupid.

Book Review: The Flight of the German East Asiatic Squadron in 1914

A must read for World War I and naval warfare aficionados, Death at Sea: Graf Spee and the Flight of the German East Asiatic Squadron in 1914 by Eric Dorn Brose, is a story describing the tragedies of war. The most fascinating aspect of the book is that it exhibits the texture of a novel amidst dense descriptions of historical events-compiled primarily from historical accounts of survivors and other primary sources. Death at Sea, through its use of English and German perspectives, as well as through the unbiased main narrator, strives to tell an authentic story of the fate of these soldiers.
